Jason H. Phillips is a painter primarily known for paintings that display incredible depth of field and color. Initially, Phillips' earlier works contained contemporary surrealistic backgrounds often including African textile patterns. Phillips' current work has become less surrealistic. Using traditional painting techniques, Phillips often reflects socio-political challenges of American urban life. "CULTURE is the base of my inspiration." Jason H. Phillips was born in Detroit, Michigan where his interest in art began at age 3. Early recognition of his talent led him to choose Cass Technical High School's noted Commercial Art curriculum. He received numerous awards and scholarships from various local and national competitions along the way. In 1992, Phillips was selected as the Marie W. Sharpe Scholar at Colorado College, where he had the opportunity to study under renowned painters such as Charles Parness and Janet Fish. Jason H. Phillips has a strong interest in using his gifts for municipal institutions. He served 5 years designing for the City of Detroit’s Communications & Creative Services department and 2 years supervising the Wayne County Clerk’s On Demand Copy Center. Phillips was awarded the “Spirit of Detroit Award” in 1998 for his work with the community. He also was awarded a “Mayoral Proclamation" in 2002 for his achievement in the arts. Recently, Phillips served as a 2010 panelist for the Michigan Council of Arts. Currently, Phillips works as a full time artist in Detroit, Michigan.
